Food & Drink

Detroit may be known for music and putting the world on wheels, but you should also know it for the food. You can check out these food guide’s from Bon Appétit, Food52, and Eater Detroit which will point you in the right direction. But take it from a local, you should not leave Detroit without trying Lebanese food, Coney dogs, and Detroit-style pizza. Some of the couple’s favorite restaurants in the Detroit Metro area are Leo’s Coney Island (any location), OWL, Shangri-La (go for dim sum), Royal Indian Cuisine, and Jet’s Pizza. The Shamsuddoha’s also recommend Buddy’s Pizza, Moose Preserve, Toast, Shatila (America’s best baklava), and Original House of Pancakes.

If you know anything about beer, you would know Michigan is home to the top two breweries in America and it’s not just Brianna’s humble opinion (here’s the proof!). While Bell’s and Founders are a bit of a drive away, their beer is available at almost every bar. If you do want a sip of local Detroit beers, check out Griffin Claw, Atwater, Jolly Pumpkin, or Rochester Mills Beer Co. Don’t love beer? Make sure to also check out the award winning spirits at Two James or Valentine’s.

Arts & Music

Where else can you see murals by Diego Rivera, the birth place of Motown music and the bus where Rosa Parks made history? Short answer, Metro Detroit.

Want to dive into American history, culture and innovation? You might think you need to visit us in D.C. but really you need to spend a full day at The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Here you’ll find a museum of Americana artifacts, from a Dymaxion House to the bus rode Rosa Parks protested in to a replica of Thomas Edison’s workshop.

Want to see one of the largest art collections in the country? Head to the Detroit Institute of Arts! It’s home to historic murals by Diego Rivera, ancient artifacts from around the world and 65,000 other exciting pieces.

Want to see where modern music was changed forever? Stop by Hitsville, U.S.A and visit the Motown Museum to see where Barry Gordy and many others made magic happen.

Of course, this is just a few of the gems in the Metro Detroit but they’re great starting places.
